Our Values

Spiritual, Moral, Social, Cultural and British Values

At Calverton we believe in building a better future for our whole community.  We ensure that we are able to provide a range of different activities and experiences that promote wellbeing and community cohesion.

British Values

We believe ‘British Values’ helps to provide pupils with knowledge, skills and understanding to prepare them to play a full and active part in society.

“British Values should equip pupils with the skills and knowledge to explore political and social issues critically, to weigh evidence, debate and make reasoned arguments. It should also prepare pupils to take their place in society as responsible citizens.” (The National Curriculum in England Framework Document (DfE) 2014).

Our well-balanced curriculum promotes the spiritual, moral, cultural, mental and physical development of pupils and prepares them for the opportunities, responsibilities and experiences of later life.

Aims

Through our Social Moral Spiritual and Cultural Provision, we aim to:-

  • enable students to develop their self-knowledge, self-esteem and self-confidence;
  • enable students to distinguish right from wrong and to respect the civil and criminal law of England;
  • encourage students to accept responsibility for their behaviour, show initiative and to understand how they can contribute positively to the lives of those living and working in the locality of the school and to society more widely;
  • enable students to acquire a broad general knowledge of and respect for public institutions and services in England.

Democracy

At Calverton Primary School we listen to children’s and parents’ voices.  Our school behaviour policy is clear that children are expected to contribute and co-operate, taking into account the views of others.  The School Council also allows children to have a voice by participating in the election of class representatives and putting forward their views and suggestions.

The Rule of Law

We consistently reinforce our high expectations of children.  Children are taught the value and reasons behind our expectations (school values and rules) that they are there to protect us, that everyone has a responsibility and that there are consequences when rules are broken.

Individual Liberty

Within school, children are actively encouraged to make choices, knowing that they are in a safe and supportive environment.  As a school we educate and provide boundaries for young children to make choices safely, through our provision of a safe environment and empowering teaching.  Children are encouraged to know, understand and exercise their rights and personal freedoms.

Mutual Respect

Part of our school ethos and behaviour policy has revolved around Core Values such as Respect and children are modelled by them caring, sharing and listening to others.  The staff help children to understand how to respect by talking about how actions and words can affect others.

Tolerance of those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We aim to enhance children’s understanding of different faiths and beliefs by participating in a range of celebrations throughout the year.  We encourage children and parents/carers to participate and support our multi-cultural events and celebrations such as International Evening.

We are also an Education4Change school. This is incorporated into our Values-Led PSHE curriculum. Our lessons aim to engage and open minds by challenging, inspiring and motivating children and young people to both prepare for, call out, and challenge racism when they experience or encounter it. Our school is a setting where diversity is celebrated, where misconceptions are challenged, and where equality is the expectation. We believe in equipping young people to be agents of positive change in their schools and communities, as well as in the world where they will have an impact as global citizens.
