Year 2 Team

Class Teacher - Sarah Linford & Rashida Sufi

Additional Staff

In Year 2, pupils are exposed to a rich and varied curriculum. We continue to build upon the basic key skills taught in Year 1 and focus on deepening children’s understanding of the key concepts in Reading, Writing and Maths.

Reading

Pupils will take part in daily reading sessions that ensure success in reading, writing and spelling. We will be supporting all children to learn to read fluently and at speed so they can focus on developing their skills in comprehension, vocabulary and spelling.

Children explore  a range of genres including poems and discuss themes and make links between books they have read in the past.

Writing

During year 2, children will start to plan their writing in more detail. They will begin to organise their sentences and gather their thoughts into sections. They will recognise that stories have different parts (introduction, build-up, problem and resolution) and begin using some of these when creating their own narratives.

As their confidence and skills grow, children will start to write for different purposes. They will explore different text types including poetry, instructions and balanced arguments. At this age, children will start to take the audience into consideration - they will begin to consider why the text is being written and how it will help the reader.

Maths

Children will consolidate their knowledge of maths fundamentals while developing their maths reasoning and problem-solving abilities.

In Science Year 2 will learn about:

  • Living things and their habitats, including dependence within habitats and micro-habitats

  • Plants, observing how seeds and bulbs grow into plants and what plants need to stay healthy

  • Animals including humans,  nutrition and exercise

  • Uses of everyday materials, comparing the use of everyday materials and looking how these can be changed by exerting force.

Throughout the year  children will also learn topics such as The Great Fire of London, Florence Nightingale, The River Thames and what life was like for a child in Victorian times.
